The Five Alls in 1914

The name "The Five Alls" comes from the five alls, which are:

I govern all.
I pray for all.
I plead for all.
I fight for all.
I pay for all

Recently Roy Thacker, who was born in the Five Alls when his grandfather Thomas Guy was landlord in 1929 informed me of the alternative version which is:

The Queen Rules over All
The Parson Prays for All
The Lawyer pleads for All
The Soldier Fights for All
The Worker pays for All

The Five Alls is Benwick's now only pub; in a village which once boasted seven! It was also the newest. Originally owned by Morgans Breweries, and the pub was ran by Thomas Guy in the early 1900's until 1936 when Ethel and Cyril Chaplin took over.

Back then, it was only a beer house with a tap room, which was half of the present bar area. Morgans breweries eventually sold out to Hall, Cutlack and Harlock which then amalgamated with Huntingdon Ales - the same brewery which owned The Bell. It later became East Anglican Breweries then Steward and Pattersons and then Manns, before it finally became Watneys in the 1950's, which it remained until Tom and Jen Granger purchased it from them which is when the Five Alls became the free house which it is now. Tom and Jen sold around 1999 to Cath and Dennis White, in 2006 Gina and Kevin White began running the pub.

After the Second World War, the front room; which was previously private became a Smoke Room. In 1957, Watneys renovated the inside of the Five Alls, and made the one big bar and lounge which remains today. Inside toilets were installed and the Bowls Green was laid; which remained until Tom and Jen left.
