Benwick In The News
Being a small village, Benwick doesn't make major news very often. But on these pages you can read about all the times that Benwick has managed to make it into the papers. There is an archive of the past I years, and a little bit from before then too! If you have any newspaper clippings then please let me know, and anything you send will be duly accredited.
Benwick receives two free local newspapers a week. The Cambs Times on a Friday and The Fenland Citizen on a Wednesday. It is from these sites which the news articles here are taken from. We would like to thank the Cambs Times and The Citizen for allowing us use of these articles. Please visit their websites for more local news.

Do you have any Benwick Bygones?
A new book on the history of Benwick is being put together by Janet Foutain and Adam Keppel-Garner. "Benwick Bygones is due to be released this year, and the authors have put in a lot of work bringing the history of the village together.
Already, a few people have contributed photographs and history of the village and Adam has used pictures from his website, www.lilyholtroad.co.uk.
But there are some photographs they would like. In particular these are: The George Pub, The White Hart Pub and The Benwick Feast. They also need photographs and programmes from the 1953 coronation and the same from the 1977 silver jubilee.
Adam is keen to receive information on the New World Chapel which was near the Swann Inn alongside Dykemoor Drove. If you have any of these or any other photographs, newspaper cuttings, general information or anything else then Janet and Adam would like to hear from you.
They are looking for anyone who has any memorabilia from the village. Contact Janet on 01354 677228 or Adam on 01354 677494 or adam@lilyholtroad.co.uk

Traffic Trouble
RESIDENTS in Benwick are concerned about extra traffic in the village in the wake of the Forty Foot Bank being closed due to part of the bank collapsing.
There have been three accidents in the village within days of each other -
one at Ramsey Road and two at Doddington Road.
Residents are concerned about the traffic and think the sharp corners along
Doddington Road are catching drivers out.
The bends have been the site of accidents in the past but recently, two
vehicles have crashed within two days - one going across a resident's
garden. The Doddington Road is restricted to 30 mph and the bends are just
outside the limit but are signed.
Nearby residents feel some drivers use the village as a "race track" and the
matter was due to be raised at yesterday's parish council meeting. Chairman
Howard Langford said he understood residents would raise the matter at the
meeting, if not, he said it would be raised by councillors.
Mr Langford said he isn't sure what can be done but he hoped possibly police
could carry out speed checks. He said the council had asked for a weight
limit through the village but was told this couldn't be done because it
would divert traffic round the Forty Foot Bank road which is a blackspot.
Mr Langford said traffic has increased since the Forty Foot diversions went
up - particularly at rush-hour times. "Cars come down here like merry
stink," he said, claiming people are making their way to work at Huntingdon.
