Reward For Young Hero

A YOUNG Benwick lad who climbed down a manhole to rescue his trapped brother was rewarded with a book and a pat on the back from the local police.

It was in 1974 that eight-year-old Kevin Wheatley, of Old West Estate, kept a cool head and rescued his brother Mark, who had become trapped in the manhole in Green Lane, Benwick.

The presentation of a book on the weather, was made by chief Inspector Roy Heslop, sub-divisional commander, who told pupils at the village primary school that Kevin had set a very good example.

Being a small village, Benwick doesn't make major news very often. But on these pages you can read about all the times that Benwick has managed to make it into the papers. There is an archive of the past I years, and a little bit from before then too! If you have any newspaper clippings then please let me know, and anything you send will be duly accredited.
