The information from this page is from The Wisbech Quakers Roll by Laurel Phillipson

"Quakers share a way of life rather than a set of beliefs. Quakers seek to experience God directly, within themselves and in their relationships with others and the world around them. We meet together for worship in local meetings which are inclusive and open to all.

The Quaker way has its roots in Christianity and finds inspiration in the Bible and the life and teachings of Jesus. Quakers also find meaning and value in the teachings of other faiths; we acknowledge that ours is not the only way.

Our focus is on our experience rather than written statements of belief. Our sense of community does not depend on professing identical beliefs, but from worshipping, sharing and working together." - www.quaker.org.uk

The Wisbech Roll of Quakers is an exceptional document due to the length and systematic way in which is was compiled over 4 months, and for its unusual legal background. Most signatories on the roll were Quakers. The following list of people are those from Benwick which signed the roll.

George Allein
Baxter Batson
Peter Behage
John Burges
Thomas Burges
David Burgess
Thomas Dawson
Jacob Gardine
John German
Robert Johnson
Thomas Langman
Richard Parker
William Quince

I expect that the three men with the name Burgess were all related, and that their name was spelt the same (notice that there is only 1 s on two of them). Burgess was a long lasting Benwick name, Squire Thomas Burgess lived at Jasmine House in the 1800's, and he gave the land to the Church for St. Mary's to be built on.

I have managed to collect a few items which may be of interest to a few people, these include the Parish Registers from St. Mary's Church, a few death certificates from the Baptist Chapel, information on the soldiers from World War I & II and lots more.

Much of it is on these pages, except the Parish Records which I think are probably copyrighted by the Cambridgeshire Family History Society; however if you e-mail me, I will search through for any names which you ask me to and report back to you.

If you have information which may be useful on these pages, please contact me:
