1st Benwick Scouts
The Scouts is one of the biggest groups in the village, with a section for each of the four scout movements, it is also one of the biggest scout movements in Fenland. The 1st Benwick Scouts first formed years ago, but were disbanded at some point, and did not start up again until around 1996 when the Beavers formed in the village, it wasn't until around 1999 that the Cubs started, and 2003 when the Scouts formed. The final group; the Explorers formed in 2006.
Each group meets once a week in the Village Hall, every week in the school terms; with the exception of the Explorers.
As soon as a child reaches 4 years old, they can be placed on the waiting list for joining Beavers, which is for ages 6-8, from then they move onto Cubs, aged 8-11 and then to Scouts for those aged 11-14.
They then pass on the details of any Scout turning 13 to the local Explorer Scout Unit, which is also based in the village. The Explorer Scout Section will make contact regarding available places just before the Scouts 14th birthday.
Sleepovers and Camping
Beavers
Scout Association rules limit the length of time Beaver Scouts can be in the care of our Group to a maximum of 24 hours at a time. Any overnight trips have to involve them sleeping in a suitable building and all cooking is done in kitchens.
Cubs
Cub Scouts can go away for longer periods, usually over the course of a weekend, and sleep in tents or buildings. We have our own tents, which are pitched by adults prior to the start of the camp. We usually aim to camp at least once a year. All cooking is done by adults in our own Mess Tents on a series of stoves or in kitchens as the campsite allows. Camps can be anywhere in the country.
Scouts
Scouts can camp for longer and are expected to assist with the pitching of the tents. Scouts may use our or their own tents. We also encourage the Scouts to do some of their own cooking. Our Scout Troop is very active and camps range from a few days locally to a week or longer further afield.
