In 1858 some land in Benwick was divided; half an acre was given for a School Building, and much was sold - 6 acres where given to the poor. It is this land which the Turf Fen rents out.

Originally Turf Fen was ran by the Parish Council; that was up until 1998 when it became registered with the Charity Commission as a Charity (number 1067667). The purpose of the Charity is to relieve the people of Benwick who are in need, hardship or distress.

Turf Fen can make grants of money and provide or pay for goods for residents of Benwick who are in need, they can also make grants to other persons or bodies who provide facilities to those in need. The type of things that Turf Fen can help with include utility bills, rent, council tax, food clothing and such.

Those who wish to apply for a grant are required to fill in a Confidential application form which only the trustees and in some circumstances the Charity Commission have access to. Annual accounts show the amounts paid out; but do not include details and names.

The application form was circulated around the village late November and addition copies will be available to download here very soon.
