February 08 Update

Genealogy...New Village Groups...More Pictures....

Genealogy Section

The first update on the site this month is the new Genealogy Section. It was created due to the number of people who have contacted me requesting help and also because genealogy is becoming a bigger things these days especially with the internet containing so many sources of information. In the genealogy section, there is everything I can find to do with past residents of the village. From extracts from the school Records, to the donations received to build the Baptist Chapel in 1874, there is also a full transcription of the Baptist Cemetery and the other two will be done in due course. The section is only small at the moment but is likely to grow and grow - especially when people get involved and help out. Click here to view the section.

Turf Fen

Flashbacks

Gradually whilst researching the history I have uncovered great detail about different village events and moments from the past, putting all the detail I found onto the pages for them would make it harder to follow and the flow would be lost; and some information I find simply doesn't fit in with anything else! That's where the Flashbacks page comes in, each month I will look at a different moment in time, this month I started with the plane crash of 1989, and also with a bit about Gresalda - the Benwick Witch! You can read more bout this all here.

Twenty Questions

You can visit the pages here and here (links).

Other Updates

As usual there are lots of little updates too, I have uploaded loads of new photos of the village taken over the last month, and with thanks to March Museum and also Mr. Martin Evans - I have even more photos of the village in the olden days. Click here to visit the current pictures, and here for the old.

I have also started trying to put names to faces with regards to the war memorial. Studying some photos I had I saw 4 of the soldiers who lost their lives in World War One, and this has started me on a mission to get a photo for each of the soldiers. You can see my progress on the page for the War Memorial.

There is also another 360 degree view of the village up and running, this one of the Village Sign - another one will be uploaded in the middle of the month when its completed. Keep checking back for constant updates!

November 07 Update

More pages... more information... and more pictures!!

360 Benwick

A brilliant idea stuck me this month – panoramic view of the village. While many of the visitors to the site are residents of Benwick; and know what the village looks like – I also have many visitors from other areas, while pictures will show them the village; they won’t really know what it looks like. The 360 views will help. By loading the flash animations; you can navigate yourself in a circle around different areas of the village; as though you were actually there! This month I have uploaded two; The War Memorial and the Park. Another will be uploaded in a week or two and more will follow regularly. Click here to look around!

Photos From Events

This month I attended the Village Hall Halloween Disco, which was a great success; raising over £200 for the Village Hall. I took loads of photos and many have been uploaded on the website. This lead to a new page especially for photos from events – I will be trying to attend many events around the village and take photos from them all. Prints of photos are available for purchase; the money going to the a village group at the end of the year or the specific cause. The sale of the photos from this event goes to the Village Hall. Click here to see

Twenty Questions

This months Twenty Questions star is Jenny Fell click here read her answers

History

This month I have spent a great deal of time researching into the history of Benwick. I spent many days down at March Library scouring every book in the Local Studies section for every scrap of Benwick information. I met it with great success and have found out plenty of history. I have also been in contact with people across the country. Benwick Baptist Chapel was something of an enigma which very few people knew information about. I e-mailed various organisations and finally ended up in contact with David Woodruff of the Strict Baptist Historical Society. He found out a great deal for me, and sent me photocopies of the Church Records. Including a brilliant little photo of the Chapel and copies of some death certificates (a few of which died in my house!). A massive thank you has to be said to him for all his help. Click here to visit the past!

Other Updates

There is also more information on the War Memorial.. I have changed the pictures page so you can browse by month; as there is getting to be a lot and the thumbnails slow the page loading. I also took time to go around the village for even more photos this can be seen on pictures page.
